Pixelate (mosaic / censor) a whole image to obscure faces or private details. Larger blocks hide more. Runs entirely in your browser — your image is never uploaded.
Quick answer
To pixelate an image, upload it and choose a block size — larger blocks hide more detail. The tool shrinks the image down and scales it back up with smoothing turned off, producing the blocky mosaic effect used to censor faces, license plates, names, and other private information. It runs entirely in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded.
Formula & method
Pixelation works by downsampling: the image is drawn to a small off-screen canvas (its size set by your block value) and then drawn back to full size with image smoothing disabled. Disabling smoothing makes each shrunken pixel expand into a solid square block, which destroys fine detail — exactly what you want when censoring sensitive content.
Examples
- Input
- Block size 20
- Result
- Heavily blurred mosaic
- Why
- A large block size makes faces unrecognizable.
- Input
- Block size 6
- Result
- Subtle mosaic
- Why
- Smaller blocks obscure less and keep more shape.
- Input
- Block size 30
- Result
- Unreadable blocks
- Why
- Very large blocks reliably hide numbers and text.
When to use this tool
- Censoring faces, names, or license plates before sharing a photo.
- Obscuring sensitive details in a screenshot.
- Creating a retro or mosaic art effect.
Common mistakes
- Using too small a block size, which leaves enough detail to still identify the subject.
- Assuming light blur is irreversible — for true censoring, use a strong block size on the final export.
- Pixelating the whole image when you only meant to hide one area (this tool pixelates the entire photo).
Frequently asked questions
How do I pixelate an image?
Upload it and drag the block-size slider; the preview updates live. Bigger blocks hide more detail. Then download the PNG.
Is it safe for censoring private info?
Use a large block size so detail is genuinely destroyed. Unlike a light blur, strong pixelation cannot be reversed to recover the original.
Does it pixelate the whole image?
Yes, this tool applies the mosaic to the entire photo. Crop to the region first if you only want to obscure part of it.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The effect is applied locally on a canvas in your browser.
What format do I get?
A PNG image. The pixelation is baked in, so it can't be undone after download.
Can I use it on mobile?
Yes — it works in any modern mobile browser.
