Free Running Pace Calculator
Find your running pace per kilometer and per mile from any distance and finish time, and see your average speed in km/h and mph. Useful for planning 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon efforts.
Enter your distance and finish time to find your running pace per kilometer and per mile, plus your average speed.
Pace = time ÷ distance. We convert with 1 mile = 1.609344 km. Pace is shown as minutes:seconds per unit; average speed is distance ÷ time.

Quick answer
Running pace is your finish time divided by the distance covered, usually expressed as minutes and seconds per kilometer or per mile. For example, 10 km run in 50 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per km (about 8:03 per mile) and an average speed of 12.0 km/h. To convert between units, 1 mile equals 1.609344 kilometers, so pace per mile equals pace per km multiplied by 1.609344.
Formula & method
Pace = total time ÷ distance. Enter the distance with its unit (km or miles) and the finish time as hours, minutes and seconds. The calculator converts the time to total minutes (hours × 60 + minutes + seconds ÷ 60) and the distance into both kilometers and miles using 1 mile = 1.609344 km. Pace per km = total minutes ÷ distance in km, and pace per mile = total minutes ÷ distance in miles; each is displayed as minutes:seconds. Average speed = distance ÷ time, shown as km/h (distance in km ÷ time in hours) and mph (distance in miles ÷ time in hours).
Examples
- Input
- distance = 10 km, time = 0 h 50 min 0 s
- Result
- 5:00 /km, 8:03 /mi, 12.00 km/h (7.46 mph)
- Why
- Pace per km = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min = 5:00. In miles, 10 km ÷ 1.609344 = 6.2137 mi, so 50 ÷ 6.2137 = 8.047 min ≈ 8:03 /mi. Speed = 10 ÷ (50/60 h) = 12.00 km/h.
- Input
- distance = 5 km, time = 0 h 25 min 0 s
- Result
- 5:00 /km, 12.00 km/h
- Why
- Pace per km = 25 ÷ 5 = 5.00 min = 5:00 /km. Average speed = 5 km ÷ (25/60 h) = 5 ÷ 0.41667 = 12.00 km/h — the same effort level as the 10 km example.
- Input
- distance = 3 mi, time = 0 h 30 min 0 s
- Result
- 10:00 /mi, 6:13 /km, 6.00 mph (9.66 km/h)
- Why
- Pace per mile = 30 ÷ 3 = 10:00 /mi. In km, 3 mi × 1.609344 = 4.828 km, so 30 ÷ 4.828 = 6.214 min ≈ 6:13 /km. Speed = 3 mi ÷ 0.5 h = 6.00 mph (9.66 km/h).
- Input
- distance = 21.0975 km, time = 1 h 45 min 0 s
- Result
- 4:59 /km, 12.06 km/h
- Why
- Total time = 105 min. Pace per km = 105 ÷ 21.0975 = 4.977 min ≈ 4:59 /km. Average speed = 21.0975 ÷ 1.75 h = 12.06 km/h.
When to use this tool
- Setting a target pace before a 5K, 10K, half-marathon or marathon and translating it between minutes per km and minutes per mile.
- Checking the average pace and speed of a finished run when your watch or app only reported the total time and distance.
- Planning interval or tempo workouts where you need to hit a specific seconds-per-kilometer or seconds-per-mile target.
- Comparing efforts logged in different units, for example a treadmill set in mph against an outdoor run measured in km/h.
Common mistakes
- Mixing the distance unit with the time. Make sure 8:03 is read as per mile and 5:00 as per km — they describe the same run, not two different efforts.
- Typing the finish time as a decimal like 50.5 minutes in the seconds box. Use the separate hour, minute and second fields; 50 minutes 30 seconds is 0 h, 50 min, 30 s, not 50.5.
- Confusing pace with speed. Pace is time per distance (lower is faster), while speed is distance per time (higher is faster); 5:00 /km equals 12 km/h.
- Using 1 mile = 1.6 km for conversions. The exact factor is 1.609344 km, and rounding it early can shift your per-mile pace by a couple of seconds.
Frequently asked questions
How is running pace calculated?
Pace is total time divided by distance. Convert your finish time to minutes (hours × 60 + minutes + seconds ÷ 60), then divide by the distance. The result is minutes per kilometer or per mile, usually written as minutes:seconds, such as 5:00 /km.
How do I convert pace per kilometer to pace per mile?
Multiply your pace per km by 1.609344, since one mile is 1.609344 km. A pace of 5:00 (5.00 minutes) per km becomes 5.00 × 1.609344 = 8.047 minutes, or about 8:03 per mile. To go the other way, divide pace per mile by 1.609344.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace measures time per unit of distance (minutes per km or mile), so a smaller number is faster. Speed measures distance per unit of time (km/h or mph), so a larger number is faster. A pace of 5:00 /km is the same as an average speed of 12 km/h.
What is a good running pace?
It depends entirely on fitness, distance, terrain and goals, so there is no universal target. Many recreational runners fall somewhere around 5:30 to 7:00 per km (about 9:00 to 11:00 per mile), but the right pace for you is one you can sustain safely for your chosen distance.
How do I work out a finish time for a marathon at a set pace?
Multiply your pace per km by the distance in km. At 5:00 /km (5.00 minutes), a 42.195 km marathon takes 5.00 × 42.195 = 210.975 minutes, about 3 hours 31 minutes. The same logic works in miles with pace per mile times 26.2188 miles.
Does this calculator work for walking?
Yes. Pace is simply time divided by distance regardless of activity, so it works for walking, jogging, running or cycling. For estimating calories burned while walking, a dedicated walking calorie calculator is more suitable.
Is running pace information medical advice?
No. This tool performs a neutral time-and-distance calculation and provides general information only. It does not assess your health or fitness level. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional before starting or intensifying a training program.
