Formula & method

Enter your sex, then measure with a flexible tape in centimeters: height; neck circumference just below the larynx; and natural waist (at the navel for men, at the narrowest point for women). Women also enter hip circumference at the widest point. The calculator applies the U.S. Navy circumference formula using base-10 logarithms (Math.log10). For men it uses waist minus neck; for women it uses waist plus hip minus neck. The resulting percentage is mapped to a category using American Council on Exercise (ACE) reference ranges, which differ for men and women. Because body fat cannot be negative, results are floored at 0%, and the waist must be larger than the neck for a valid estimate.

Common mistakes
