Exponent (power)

The number of times a base is multiplied by itself.

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a base by itself: in b^n, b is the base and n the exponent. A negative exponent means a reciprocal (b^−n = 1 ÷ b^n), a zero exponent equals 1, and a fractional exponent represents a root. Exponents are the inverse operation of logarithms and the foundation of exponential growth.

Example: 2⁵ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32; 2⁻¹ = 0.5.
