Quick answer
There are 195 recognised countries in the world. Each has a capital city, a geographic area, an estimated population, an official or widely used currency, and one or more official languages. Use this tool to look up any country's key facts. For example, Japan has a population of about 125 million, an area of 377,975 km², its capital is Tokyo, currency is the Yen (JPY), and official language is Japanese.
Formula & method
When you choose a country, its key facts — capital, population, area, currency, languages and region — are read from a reference dataset bundled with the page, so the lookup is instant and works offline after the first load. The capital is then centred and pinned on an interactive Leaflet map using OpenStreetMap tiles. All data stays in your browser.

When to use this tool
- Quick reference for geography quizzes, school projects, or travel research.
- Checking the official currency before travelling or making an international payment.
- Verifying a country's capital for data entry or form validation.
- Understanding the geographic scale and demographics of a country you are doing business with.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the largest or most famous city is always the capital — Brazil's capital is Brasília, not São Paulo; Australia's is Canberra, not Sydney.
- Confusing country and currency names — Switzerland uses Swiss Franc (CHF), not Euro, despite being surrounded by Eurozone countries.
- Thinking population figures are exact — national populations change daily and official estimates vary by source and methodology.
- Mixing up area and population for countries of similar size — Canada is the 2nd largest by area but has a much smaller population than similarly sized countries.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in the world?
There are 195 internationally recognised countries — 193 UN member states plus Vatican City and Palestine, which have observer status. The exact count depends on political recognition; some sources cite 196 or 197.
What is the largest country by area?
Russia is the largest country by area at approximately 17,098,242 km² — over 11% of Earth's total land area. Canada (9,984,670 km²) and the United States (9,833,517 km²) are second and third.
What is the most populous country?
India surpassed China in 2023 to become the world's most populous country with an estimated 1.43 billion people. China has approximately 1.41 billion.
Does every country have exactly one official language?
No. Many countries have multiple official languages — Switzerland has four (German, French, Italian, Romansh); South Africa has eleven. Some countries, like the United States, have no constitutionally designated official language at the federal level.
Where does population data come from?
Population figures are sourced from the REST Countries API, which aggregates data from the World Bank and UN estimates. Figures are periodically updated but reflect estimates rather than real-time counts.
Why is some country data missing or incomplete?
A small number of territories and partially recognised states may have incomplete or absent data in the underlying REST Countries database. Generally, all 195 recognised sovereign nations have complete entries.
