Quick answer
A countdown calculator finds the number of days between today and a target date by subtracting the earlier date from the later date. For example, from June 11 2026 to January 1 2027 is exactly 204 days, or 29 weeks and 1 day. The same method works in reverse for past dates, telling you how many days have elapsed since that date. Weeks are calculated by dividing the total days by 7, and months are approximated by counting full calendar months between the two dates.
Formula & method
Days Remaining = Target Date − Today
- Target Date — The future (or past) date you are counting toward
- Today — The current calendar date
- Days Remaining — Positive value = days until target; negative value = days since target
Calculated as the integer number of calendar days from today (inclusive of the target date, exclusive of today) using UTC midnight timestamps to avoid daylight-saving shifts.
Weeks = ⌊Days / 7⌋, Remaining Days = Days mod 7
- ⌊ ⌋ — Floor (round down to nearest integer)
- mod — Modulo — remainder after division
Integer division of total days by 7 gives full weeks; the modulus gives the leftover days.
Examples
- Input
- Start date: June 11, 2026 → Target date: January 1, 2027
- Result
- 204 days (29 weeks and 1 day, approximately 6 months)
- Why
- From June 11 2026 to January 1 2027 spans 204 calendar days. Dividing 204 by 7 gives 29 full weeks with 1 day left over (29 × 7 = 203, 204 − 203 = 1). Six full calendar months separate June and December, placing the result at roughly 6 months away.
- Input
- Start date: June 11, 2026 → Target date: December 25, 2026
- Result
- 197 days (28 weeks and 1 day, approximately 6 months)
- Why
- From June 11 2026 to December 25 2026 is 197 calendar days. Dividing 197 by 7 gives 28 full weeks with 1 day remaining (28 × 7 = 196, 197 − 196 = 1). The span covers parts of June through December, totalling approximately 6 calendar months.
- Input
- Start date: June 11, 2026 → Target date: October 31, 2026
- Result
- 142 days (20 weeks and 2 days, approximately 4 months)
- Why
- From June 11 2026 to October 31 2026 is 142 calendar days. Dividing 142 by 7 gives 20 full weeks with 2 days left over (20 × 7 = 140, 142 − 140 = 2). The span covers June through October — 4 full calendar months.
- Input
- Start date: July 4, 2025 → Checked on: June 11, 2026
- Result
- 342 days have passed (48 weeks and 6 days, approximately 11 months)
- Why
- From July 4 2025 to June 11 2026 is 342 elapsed calendar days. Dividing 342 by 7 gives 48 full weeks with 6 days left over (48 × 7 = 336, 342 − 336 = 6). Counting forward from July 2025 to June 2026 covers 11 full calendar months.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator include today in the count?
No. The countdown counts the number of days from today (not including today itself) up to and including the target date. This matches the most common convention — if tomorrow is the target date the result is 1, not 0.
What happens if I enter a date in the past?
The calculator automatically detects that the target date has already passed and switches to 'elapsed' mode, showing how many days, weeks, and months have gone by since that date.
How are months calculated?
Months are counted as full calendar months between the start and end date. For example, June 11 to August 11 is exactly 2 months. Partial months are not counted, so June 11 to August 10 would show 1 month.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation uses actual calendar dates rather than a fixed 365-day assumption, so leap years — where February has 29 days — are handled automatically and correctly.
What is the difference between this and a date-difference calculator?
A date-difference calculator finds the gap between any two arbitrary dates. This countdown calculator always anchors one end to today, making it optimised for planning — weddings, project deadlines, exam dates, or personal milestones.
Can I count down to a recurring annual event?
Yes. Simply enter the next occurrence of the event as the target date. If the event has already passed this year, enter next year's date instead. You can bookmark the page and re-check the countdown as often as you like.
